Planned Giving

Members of the Guardian Circle are donors who have provided for George Mark Children’s House through their will or other planned giving options.

GMCH Welcomes the Following Types of Planned Gifts:

Bequest
Making a bequest to GMCH is the most popular form of planned gift.  There is no cost to the prospective donor for making a bequest, but to do so, you must sign a new will or living trust, add a codicil to your current will, or make an amendment to your current trust instrument.  Moreover, bequests can include cash, securities, real estate, other property, and all or a percentage of your estate’s residue.  An outright gift from your estate is totally free of federal estate taxes.  You may also choose to make your bequest to GMCH unrestricted, restricted to a particular purpose, or as an endowed fund (named or as part of GMCH’s general endowment).

Before completing your bequest to GMCH, please contact a member of the GMCH development staff, so that we can help ensure that your philanthropic goals will be met.  We would be happy to provide you with sample bequest language that you can share with your legal or financial counsel.

Life Income Gifts
A life income gift allows you to make a gift to GMCH and provide yourself or others with income for a period of years before GMCH can use your gift.  As with a bequest, you may choose to fund a life income gift with cash, securities, real estate, or other property.  When the trust is funded, a trustee will manage the assets and pays an income to you and your beneficiaries.  These payments continue for your lifetime, as well as your beneficiaries’ lifetimes, or occasionally for a period of time up to 20 years.  After that, the remaining assets in the trust go to GMCH to support its important work.  Here too, your life income gift may come to GMCH as an unrestricted or restricted gift, or as a named, endowed fund.  Currently, GMCH features the following two types of life income gifts:

  • Charitable Remainder Unitrust—provides income to you or to your beneficiary on the basis of a percentage (usually at least 5 percent) of the trust’s value, which is re-valued annually.
  • Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust—provides income to you or your beneficiary on the basis of a fixed annual payment.

Potential advantages you may gain by establishing a life income gift benefiting GMCH are as follows:

  • You receive an immediate income tax deduction for a portion of your contribution to the annuity trust or unitrust.
  • You pay no upfront capital gains tax on any appreciate assets you contribute to fund the annuity trust or unitrust.
  • With an annuity trust, you or your beneficiary receives a stable, predictable income for life; and with the unitrust, you or your beneficiary receive income for life or a term of years.
  • You have the satisfaction of making a significant gift that benefits you now and supports GMCH’s important work later.

Gifts of Real Property
You may also wish to make one of a variety of non-cash gifts to benefit GMCH, including gifts of real estate, retirement plans, life insurance, personal property, or publicly traded securities.  Such gifts may be made as outright gifts, bequests, or other planned gifts.  Such gifts may require an independent appraisal to substantiate their value for tax deductibility purposes.
