Autumn Update

George Mark has just passed a critical milestone—the one year mark since we fully reopened under our new and improved business model. If there is one word that sums up my feelings, that word is “grateful.”

The reorganization that George Mark has undergone continues to demand ingenuity, hard work and flexibility from our staff, volunteers, Board of Directors and supporters alike, as we hold ourselves to the task of delivering our top quality pediatric palliative care in a more cost effective and sustainable manner. At the one year mark, I’m very pleased to report that our new business model seems to be working.

Allow me to share with you just a few examples of this hard earned success. In June, we closed our 2010/11 fiscal year with a positive balance of just over $21,000, a remarkable turnaround from the previous year, when income fell almost $1.8 million dollars short of expenses. Our daily patient census has been steadily increasing, approaching our goal of five patients per day for the current fiscal year. Our recent gala was attended by a record 450 people. I’m also very pleased to report that George Mark has been accepted into the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business Social Sector Solutions Program to develop a report that will conclusively show the exceptional patient health outcomes and cost savings achieved by our holistic approach to pediatric palliative care.

However, the most important indicator of our success remains the satisfaction expressed by our remarkable patients and families, who remind us on a daily basis of the tremendous power of love, courage, and determination in the face of adversity.

In this season of thanksgiving, I’d like to close by expressing my gratitude to each of you for your continued support of George Mark. With your help, it looks like we’ll be here supporting children with life limiting illness and their families for decades to come.

Warm regards,

Peter
