In 2006, we founded an organization dedicated to introducing young Bay Area professionals to George Mark Children’s House, the nation’s first freestanding home for children with serious and terminal illnesses, and their families. We became involved with George Mark Children’s House through a personal connection for both of us. Kathy Hull, the co- founder of George Mark Children’s House, is Erica’s step mother and Elissa’s life long family friend.
In our first year, we succeeded in bringing together a group of 13 young philanthropists to organize the First Annual Tastes of the City event on October 18, 2006 at San Francisco’s Old Federal Reserve. The night was a huge success with many top SF restaurants participating & over 300 guests in attendance.
Legacy’s Mission
In 2007, we renamed our organization, Legacy. We thought it was an appropriate name for several reasons. First and foremost, we believe that the legacy a child leaves behind is important. George Mark Children’s House is dedicated to serving children & their families and enabling those children to leave behind a legacy of remembrance. We also believe that as a younger generation of philanthropists, we have an obligation to encourage giving within our age group and enable philanthropy to continue to be handed down as our legacy.
With members primarily ranging between the ages of 25 to 45, Legacy’s goal is to educate and engage a younger demographic to the cause of caring for seriously and terminally ill children and the overall importance of philanthropy. By hosting social events that raise awareness and funds for George Mark Children’s House, Legacy offers the next generation of Bay Area men and women an opportunity to give back to the community and support a special East Bay home for seriously ill children and their families.
